It started with a camping trip… and a quiet observation.
Not a big moment. Not a dramatic beginning. Just Mariana noticing Caleb from a distance, wondering about him, and keeping it to herself.
At the time, she had no idea that just a few months later, they’d be walking side by side through Cox Arboretum during their Dayton, Ohio engagement session—laughing, talking, and getting ready to start a life together.
That’s what we kept thinking about as we spent the morning with them, because the way their story unfolded makes so much sense when you’re around them.
They first met through their young adults group at church, but it wasn’t until that camping trip in Kentucky that Mariana really started to notice Caleb. She watched him from afar, curious, but didn’t say anything at the time.
A few weeks later, before heading back to Costa Rica, her friends threw her a goodbye party. Caleb came… but left without saying goodbye. And for some reason, that small moment stuck with her.
Not long after, on Thanksgiving Day, Mariana asked Caleb’s sister to wish him a happy birthday. Just a few minutes later, she received a message from Caleb—and that message turned into something neither of them expected.
For three months, they talked every single day. Not in person, not in big, grand moments, but through consistent, intentional conversation. They got to know each other as friends first—learning who the other person really was and building something steady before anything official ever began.
And somewhere in the middle of that, both of them started to feel the same thing… while quietly wondering if the other did too.
When Mariana came back to the States, everything finally had the chance to unfold in person. After a few missed chances to ask her out, Caleb saw his opportunity when Mariana sent him a photo of a play they had talked about together. He didn’t let that moment pass—and their first date finally happened.
From there, everything continued to grow in the most natural way.
As we walked through the gardens that morning, it was so easy to see why their story looks the way it does. They have this effortless rhythm together—the kind where laughter comes quickly, conversations flow, and being side by side just feels right.
We had such a fun time exploring Cox Arboretum with them during their engagement session in Dayton, Ohio, moving through the spots we had planned and watching them interact, joke with each other, and pull us right into their world. They’re the kind of couple you instantly feel comfortable around, and by the end of it, it felt like we had known them for so much longer than just one morning.

When they shared how they knew they were meant for each other, their answer felt just like them.
It wasn’t one big, standout moment. It was the everyday life—grocery shopping, yard work, doing normal things side by side. And over time, it became clear that they were building toward the same kind of future—one centered on God first, and family second.
They shared that their premarital classes were a really meaningful part of that realization. Not in a surface-level way, but through deep, intentional conversations that helped lay a strong foundation for their marriage.
And their proposal felt just as thoughtful.
On Christmas Eve, at their church, with both of their families there to celebrate—Caleb asked Mariana to marry him. She had no idea it was coming, which made the moment even sweeter.
By the time we wrapped up their Dayton, Ohio engagement session, one thing felt so clear.
These two are steady in the best way. Joyful, grounded, and completely aligned in what matters most.
